Phenomenology Symposium

Phenomenology Symposium In-Person

Dive into the unfolding narrative of ChatGPT’s rapid rise, and join us at the Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center for our 42nd annual symposium "Entanglement and Style: Philosophy and the Fantasy of AI" on April 18 and 19, 2024.

The recent rise of ChatGPT offers only the latest example of how human life is becoming ever more intertwined with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The 2024 Symposium seeks to critically investigate the new ways of thinking, feeling, and acting made possible by AI. What possibilities of lived experience emerge with AI? Does AI enrich or diminish our engagement with ourselves, others, and the world? How does reality itself appear differently within a horizon permeated by AI? In this new AI-saturated lifeworld, do we become more human, less human, or differently human?

To help us reflect on these questions, the Silverman Center is pleased to welcome Prof. Alva Noë of the University of California at Berkeley as our 2024 Symposium lecturer. The author of The Entanglement: How Art and Philosophy Make Us What We Are (Princeton, 2023), as well as Out of Our Heads: Why You Are Not Your Brain and Other Lessons from the Biology of Consciousness (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2009), Prof. Noë’s cutting-edge work on the nature of mind, art, and AI—and the philosophy of baseball!—makes him a welcome guide for our investigation.

The symposium is free to attend in person or online. Registration is required. Phenomenology Symposium Registration Form (jotform.com)
