Psychology Department Colloquium featuring Dr. Thomas Csordas: Catholic Psychiatrists and the Practice of Exorcism In-Person
Catholic Psychiatrists and the Practice of Exorcism: Differential Diagnosis or Act of Faith? Psychology Department Colloquium featuring Dr. Thomas Csordas
Based on an ethnographic study of contemporary Roman Catholic exorcism in the United States and Italy, this talk poses questions of the phenomenology of bodily experience in the rite of exorcism, of whether religious healing and psychotherapy can be considered as analogous forms of addressing affliction, and of the cultural modulations of faith and reason among believing Catholic psychiatrists and mental health professionals who consult with and assist exorcists.
