A Hidden Wholeness: The Zen Photography of Thomas Merton (September 16 - November 8) In-Person

Duquesne University is pleased to be hosting a major exhibition of photographs by Thomas Merton, entitled, A Hidden Wholeness: The Zen Photography of Thomas Merton. Merton (1915-1968) was a renowned twentieth century Trappist monk, mystic, author, poet, artist, and social critic.

The exhibition will run from September 16 to November 8, 2019, in Duquesne’s Gumberg Library.  There will be two public talks associated with the exhibition.  On September 18, Dr. Paul Pearson, the Director of Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University, will speak on Beholding Paradise: Merton's Encounter with Photography and Zen.  On November 9, Zen teacher and artist Bruce Soun Harris Rōshi will offer a presentation on Seeing Which Is Being Which Is Acting.

The exhibition and talks are free and open to the public.

All of the events are sponsored by the Department of Psychology at Duquesne University. The exhibition and public talks were made possible by generous support from an anonymous donor, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Duquesne’s McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, Gumberg Library, and the Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center.
